What is a mandibular advancement orthosis?

Snoring can be caused by a number of factors. L’individual anatomy plays a major role: a narrow throat, a large tongue or enlarged tonsils can naturally restrict the passage of air. Visit overweight aggravates this phenomenon, as the excess fatty tissue around the neck compresses the airways. Other factors, such as alcohol consumption, which relaxes throat muscles, the sleeping position (especially on the back) and nasal congestion forcing you to breathe through your mouth, are also common causes of snoring.

Snoring is not without consequences. The noise caused by snoring often disturbs the partner's sleep, which can affect the quality of the relationship. As for apnoea, it can lead to alarm clocks frequent and unrefreshing sleep, leading to great fatigue during the day. In fact’a condition that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

To counter this phenomenon, there is a recognised medical solution: the’mandibular advancement orthosis. This is a dental splint worn during sleep that keeps the lower jaw (the mandible) a few millimetres forward. This mechanical advancement has a dual effect:

  1. He clears the back of the tongue, This frees the passage of air into the pharynx.

  2. He holds tissues in position, This reduces the vibrations that cause snoring noise.

The effectiveness of this treatment has been proven by numerous clinical studies to eliminate or considerably reduce snoring and the symptoms of sleep apnoea. Mandibular advancement is therefore a well-known technique in the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate apnoea.

It is an excellent alternative for patients who cannot tolerate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, which involves wearing a ventilation mask. The orthesis is often preferred for its comfort, ease of use and non-invasive nature, which makes it easier to accept over the long term. For severe cases of apnoea, CPAP remains the most effective treatment, but orthoses may be a viable solution in cases where the mask is intolerable.

Before choosing a treatment, it is essential to consult a doctor, ideally a an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist or a lung specialist. This specialist will be able to diagnose the severity of the disorder, particularly if you suffer from sleep apnoea, using tests such as polygraphy or polysomnography. This medical opinion is crucial in guiding you towards the most appropriate therapy.
